Gout sufferers constantly worry about gout attack and reducing uric acid levels to prevent gout attacks. While medication treatments are not hard to come by, a lot of gout sufferers don’t want to resort to medication to prevent gout.  That’s a very smart and healthy way of thinking, as drugs might have side effects in the long run that might harm you. Luckily for you, there are natural and healthy steps you can take to reduce your uric acid levels. Gout prevention doesn’t necessarily have to mean taking medicine. Just make it a habit to follow these tips.

Healthy Habits to Reduce Uric Acid and Prevent Gout Attacks:

1. Drink plenty of water. Yes, it’s as simple as that.  Keeping properly hydrated helps prevent gout from acting up. Water dissolves uric acid and helps the kidneys flush out uric acid from your body. Water also lowers the uric acid concentration in your blood. Make it a point to drink 2 – 3 liters or 8- 10 glasses of water daily, evenly spaced throughout the day. I know I don’t have to remind you to not try to drink it all at once.

Drinking lots of water will help reduce uric acid in your body.

2. Maintain a healthy body weight. Gout patients are typically men who are in their 40’s and are slightly to morbidly overweight or obese. Exercise regularly and maintain a proper healthy nutrition to reach and maintain your ideal weight. A healthy body weight will prevent gout and reduce uric acid levels in your body. Losing weight also lessens the strain on your joints. However, crash dieting or a sudden drop in your weight is counterproductive and may actually cause gout attacks. Also, make sure you don’t overuse the gout affected areas and overexert during exercise.

3. Watch your diet.

Uric acid comes from the breaking down of purines from the food we eat. In fact, a good portion of the body’s uric acid comes from our diet. It is just common sense to watch what food you eat.  Monitor your uric acid diet yield by avoiding foods high in purines. You can also take up a low purine diet, where you eliminate high purine foods from your diet. This will help reduce uric acid levels and prevent gout attacks from acting up.

The most important factor for these tips to work is Discipline. It might mean saying no to your favorite dish or dragging yourself to the gym or health club. But I am sure you’ll agree that this is a worthy trade-off to the excruciating pain of suffering from gout.

I drink a lot of water and cut back on the alcohol and it really has reduced my gout flair ups. My doctor suggested I add some of the cherry juice from the Traverse Bay Farms region of Michigan to my diet. I read allot of good stuff about cherry juice, but haven’t tried it yet.

My dad has gout and is quite large and doesn’t exercise. He also eats ‘bad’ foods like peanuts sometimes, even if he knows it’ll make things worse later on.

You’re right about discipline. Even if we give him all the advice we could give so that he won’t suffer another gout attack, it all boils down to his discipline.

Best thing we can do is to limit the availability of peanuts and the like in the house and to encourage him to develop the habit of eating healthily. Convincing him to exercise is another matter entirely though.

Read your other post, and yeah, I think I’m gonna let him try cherry juice, though I’m still looking for a store that sells it.

      Great articles, thanks. ????
